Summary
Adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are recognized in clinical, educational, and social service settings, such as a well child visit or a pre-school classroom. Adverse childhood experiences can increase a person’s risk for compounded stress that becomes toxic, resulting in adverse coping mechanisms, including substance use, and greater likelihood of lifelong chronic illness such as depression, heart disease, and obesity. This interactive CHIC annual meeting provides an opportunity for health care, education, and social service professionals and community residents to explore implementing trauma informed strategies to treat leading health challenges.
